The Great Buddha, bronze statue of Amida buddha, is a symbol of Kamakura. The buddha has brought peace to the people. The statue is 13.35 meters tall (sitting height) and weighs an estimated 121 tons.
One of the main attractions is that you can enter the body and see the inside.
Actually, the buddha is the second-generation. The first buddha, wooden statue, was completed in about 1243. But that wooden statue was destroyed by a storm in 1248. The present statue was construced in about 1252.
